18 years
ago while working on a long term aerospace engineering contract, one of
the projects we managed was revising the design of a complex
bomb/missle rack for the U.S.Navy.
In
2003 we were asked to fabricate some parts that were part of a safety
mechanism of that same bomb rack. Because of reliability concerns the
parts must be fabricated from a single piece of material. As a result
the more complex of the two pieces required a total of 8 separate
precision operations. Each operation removed material that was used to
clamp or inspect from in a prevous step. So it is kind of like
Sculpture,
except in chunks of stainless steel.
